Oh, this episode is gonna be fun. You're gonna learn so much about my past coaching and mentoring experiences. Picture this, you are sitting across from somebody you admire, somebody who has already built what you are trying to build. That's the rooms we wanna get into, right? That's the rooms, that's the coaches, that's the mentors we want to have.
Somebody that has already built what we are trying to build. And that coach or mentor looks at you and she says the one thing you did not see coming. That mentor tells you "never build a business on passion" You probably nodded like I did in that moment. You say you understand, but something just doesn't feel right. Something is pulling you back. You've heard some version of this or the other before, and it just never quite added up for you. That pull, that something isn't right here, that feeling right in your chest when someone you respect hands you wisdom and it's just not right.
Yvonne Heimann [00:01:34]
That coach that said, "Don't build a business in passion," she is on the right path, but she called it the wrong thing. Did I mention I'm a sucker for language and clear language? Now ask yourself, what was she talking about? Was she talking about passion or obsession? By the end of this podcast, you'll know how to tell difference between a hobby that's about to fade and you're just gonna get tired of it and not wanting to do it anymore, or a deep-seeded passion.
That passion that's at your core, that's been with you your whole life. And you know, you'll know, you'll know exactly how to build a business on what's real. So let's talk about the difference because I see so many saying, "Don't build a business on your passion." I've, I've heard it so many times, I stopped counting As I already mentioned, I've experienced it myself with one of my recent coaches.
That was not a fail. I learned a lot. I took a lot out of that. However, there was a whole bunch of other things wrong. Today, I wanna really focus just on that moment where she told me, "Don't build a business on your passion." And in that moment, I was so looking for an answer. I was so looking for guidance.
Yvonne Heimann [00:03:27]
I was so looking for somebody to tell me, what do I need to do to take this thing that I'm building to the next level? I just wanted somebody to tell me what the fuck to do, because I'm out of ideas. So I nearly believed her. However, it didn't let me go. It... This feeling of, but why am I doing it if I'm not doing it for my passion?
And it's... I let that sit and I pushed back to some extent, and part of me got where she was coming from. So the difference is, and maybe, maybe she doesn't even know what real passion is, considering I've been with a side eye following the recent changes in that person's business or not business or... I digress.
I digress. Some people potentially don't even know real passion. When you look at me, I always say I see systems where other people see chaos. I literally see patterns and systems everywhere. And even though sometimes it's really tiring, because I can't go for a walk without seeing human resources wasted there, and budget resources wasted there, I, I see it everywhere and I see how they connect.
And yes, it can get tiresome, and yes also, I love sorting things. I love sorting things. I love sorting systems. I love sorting processes. I love sorting thought patterns and way we process information. It all comes down to systems. They are everywhere. I promise you. You are running a system, AKA habit, of how you're doing things in your life, in your business, everywhere It's ingrained in me.
And when said coach said, "Don't build a business on your passion," what she was thinking about is that ADA- ADHD obsession of mine. Cool, I, for one weekend straight, I go so deep into jewelry making, buy all the things, do all the things, and three days later I have the stuff sitting there and it's not going anywhere.
Yvonne Heimann [00:06:00]
You can't build a business on that. Yes. And also, that deep-seeded passion of organizing things, of making sense of things, of systemizing things, of establishing habits and understanding language pattern, it's, it's all systems. It's literally, it's just different words slapped on top of it. That's in me, and that's not going anywhere.
So Obsession, ADHD, something that you are excited about, you don't, you don't need to ta- turn everything into a business, is different than passion, than real passion, something that lights you up over and over and over again. And It's... See, there's, there is again the habit recognition and the pattern recognition where I'm like, "Does she potentially not even know what real passion is?"
It's entirely possible. Again, we all process information differently. We, we do things differently. Um, just because this is me doesn't mean everybody else is that way. There's a lot of people that love their 9:00 to 5:00 and that find their passion in going fishing or boating on the weekend. I'm not, and that's perfectly okay. Where the problem is, is when you, as a coach, as a mentor, make such a bold statement, a strict yes or no statement of, "Don't build your business on a passion," you are potentially suffocating somebody.
Somebody that is so fueled by their passion and now suddenly you destroyed that. I think it comes back around to the bigger issue that I'm seeing that there's just one way of doing business.
Bullshit. 2024 tried to kill my business. 2024 tried to kill my business, and the only thing that kept me going, next to Luby, the only thing that kept me going was the passion for what I do. Do I always have the perfect language and the perfect wording? No. Are we working right now insanely on literally three businesses and reorganizing the first business and really streamlining and clarifying the language for Ask Yvi while building two more businesses? Yes.
Yvonne Heimann [00:08:50]
And there's going to be a shit ton of people out there going to tell you, "Number one, don't build a business on passion, and only focus on one thing." Guess what? There is a commonality throughout all of these three businesses. One does, one teaches, one gives you the tool to do so. They all match. They all- They all work together, so it makes sense.
And I think one of the biggest things that I wanna make sure you get to hear here today is just because somebody tells you there's no way you should do this or there's just one way you should do this, tell them to go fuck off. Tell them to go fuck off. Because there is people like us, like me, that are passionate about something and that can build a successful seven-figure business out of passion.
And that's where it, where it comes around because passion and profit aren't opposites. Passion, if you are somebody like me, can 10x your profit because you, you don't even need to think about how to show up. Just don't make the mistake like me and fall into the trap of life might be life-ing and suddenly you start listening to other people again that are not like you, that are not running businesses like you, that are so focused and not multi passionate.
Remind yourself that when somebody comes like that, number one, they might not even know what passion looks like. Number two, chances are what they're talking about is an obsession. It's the jewelry business that you got so focused on and you wanna burn it down five days later It also means when you have an obsession like that, you don't always have to turn it into a business.
Oh, yeah, I've been going down the rabbit hole with chain mail right now. Love how it looks, especially now that you don't have to carry twenty-five pounds around just because of chain mail. You can go all aluminum and, and nice and easy. See what I'm talking about? That's an obsession. Scrolling down and being on BookTok, that's an obsession.
Yvonne Heimann [00:11:18]
You don't have to turn it into a business. That deep-seeded passion for storytelling, for systems, for fixing technology, for teaching, whatever it is. Heck, people's always talking about ants. Believe me, there's going to be enough people out there that want to see how ants work and how that does, and you can create content about it.
And if you want to, you can turn it into a profit if you're really passionate about it. If it's an obsession, go have fun with it. You don't have to turn everything into a business and into income. So how do you make this difference? The easiest, the easiest way really for me is this, this ADHD brain, oh my God, I latched onto something. AI search did that. Oh my God, I did that today. Not a passion of mine. Search optimization, SEO, website building, not a passion of mine, especially now going down the rabbit hole to make sure that the website actually can be crawled and AI is finding us and all those things. Holy cannoli, God help me.
However, I did have a five-hour obsession with it today and went down the rabbit hole and learned a whole bunch and done a whole bunch of things and believe me, I never wanna turn it into a business. Never. That's really how you can start making the differentiation between a passion or an obsession. When you look at your passion, you see the bits and pieces throughout your life.
I organized my Hot Wheels as a kid. Did I have, did I have a junk drawer as a kid? Yes. And my room usually was pretty organized and clean. I know I literally can grab into the dishwasher blind, and I know exactly where things are. This is in me. This is my personality, and I guarantee you, you can find these personality traits to something that's always been in everything you have done and that lights you up and you love doing.
Yvonne Heimann [00:13:48]
That's where really that difference is starting to not listen to certain people. Nobody has all of the answers. And it comes back around to us needing to stop believing what marketing told coaches is right Marketing, search, all of the things have the tendency to put us in a box. I'm going down the AI search route right now, right?
Which means I need to put myself into a box somehow for us to show up in AI searches, because I know the work we deliver and the change we bring And also, even though there is that box of systems, of operational efficiency, it shows up in so many different ways, and you can work around it. And there is not just one way to do a thing.
There's not just one way of running a business. There's not just one way of showing up and doing. I want you to go deep. If, if you've ever felt this, "Oh my God, they're completely wrong," dig deep. Dig deep and ask the question why Is it because their own limiting beliefs? Is it because they might not have the language right? Is it that it doesn't matter what they think, and it's time for you to dig deeper and ask the question of why is this... Why do you have that reaction? I knew it took me a moment. Again, uh, it was in a timeframe where I was looking for answers, where I was looking for guidance and did not choose the right guidance, and I really started to ask more and more the question of in that moment where I was told to not build a business on passion, I had such a visceral moment that I wanted to grab through the camera and shake that person and smack her over the head.
I was like, "Why?" And the answer was because that's me. I'm a passionate person. When you see me on client calls, oh my God. And yes, I drop the F-bomb, and yes, sometimes I might not be as nice and flowery in my language, and I'm like, "What the fuck were you thinking?" Might happen. Because I am passionate about what I do, I'm passionate about my clients, I'm passionate about the results we are delivering, and if something is challenging that...
Yvonne Heimann [00:17:00]
And that's part of me needing to learn, especially showing up as a coach and asking more questions and hearing why somebody does certain things, where I'm like, "Why did you do that?" Many people don't have the knowledge yet. Many people see the world differently, and they use different language. I always ask more question than I tell.
Why do you feel like this doesn't feel right? And you might just discover that it is a deep-seeded passion of yours. It's not just an obsession. It's not just a I'm gonna get bored of this and wanna burn it down in, in, in three years, and that is a valid, that is a valid possibility. You don't wanna build a business and then in three years be tired of it, not being able to sell it or exit out of it.
Um, I could have stayed an electrician if I wanted that life. I wanna live now, and I wanna enjoy my life, which means my passion has to be part of that. And that's, that's where that resistance that something is off here, that person isn't right, that was your gut being right before your brain caught up.
So make sure you subscribe because I'm gonna talk about, um, gut reaction and intuition too. There is a difference in those. There is a big difference in those And if that hits home for you, if you are just as much a passionate entrepreneur as I am, send this to a woman that needs to hear this today. Send that to a woman that was told, "Don't build your business on a passion," and tell her, "Fuck yes girl, build your business on your passion," because that's what's going to fuel you when life is lifing.
Go be passionate. Go love your fucking business and not just build another 24/7 job for yourself and slap a different title on it. Build a business you are passionate about, you are proud about, and come tell me. I wanna hear about it, and I'll see you in the next episode.
